Luke 7:36-8:15

Common message between the story of the sinful woman and the parable of the sower: Nothing apart from what God has done for you can show you how precious Christ truly is or motivate you to cultivate good soil in your heart. Jesus teaches that those who are spiritually attentive will have the atmosphere to allow the gospel to transform their lives.

vv.36-39

Mini recap of the boy with loaves and fish. The woman has the same posture as the boy with loaves and fish — humility and offering of an undivided heart at Jesus’ disposal. Nothing impressive in man’s sight to offer Jesus.

vv.40-43

“Will love him more” is key to not removing any possible misunderstanding that either of these men had any merit in themselves to have their debts cancelled by the master. It’s not “which of them loved him more?” It’s future tense. This is key to unlocking Jesus’ application of this parable.

vv.44-47

When I heard this, I’m reminded of hearing testimonies of gangsters radically turning their life around because they became Christian. They thought God couldn’t save a sinner like them because of all the people they hurt and wronged. In light of the similar background of the sinful woman, it’s easy for us to interpret this as “sins little loves little.”

Sin does not humble us. Acknowledging our sin in itself is not sufficient to produce in our hearts an organic love for Christ. What can? Grace. It is grace that humbles us. Someone read Titus 2:11-12.

This passage reveals that our love for Christ is directly proportional to our understanding of how much we’ve been forgiven.

Someone read 1 John 1:9. Someone read James 5:16. Trust God. Confess your sins to God for forgiveness. Confess to one another to experience healing.

Chapter 8

vv.1-10

How you hear is more important than what you hear.

vv.11-15

• Soil along the path: You may know the word but does the word know you? Someone read Psalm 119:9-11
• Rocky soil: Received with much outward expression and outward growth, but their heart was never changed. Ran off of emotions and seasonally advantageous seasons (only during good church leadership). Didn’t take root.
• Thorny soil: What takes up room in your heart? What idols do you tolerate? You know you spend more time on entertainment or that hobby than your conscience agrees to.
• Good soil: It hears, retains, and perseveres. Each verb goes against the nature of the previous three soils. Combats all three soils through hearing the Word, retaining the Word, and perseverance.

Do you know why consumerism cannot live in the church? It has no consideration for perseverance. When things fall short of your judgement, find something more suitable for you. Congratulations you are the rocky soil. You believe for a while but times of testing come where things do not go your way.

Which lifegroup has the people I most like? Which has the best vibes for ME? Those questions are not inherently evil, but the attitude behind them will not lead us down a good path.

My prayer is that all of us here, wherever God places us, produce a crop. Actually more than that. Someone read Matthew 13:23. Hundred fold! May what was sown bear much fruit! Do not give up on the dreams God has for you! Consign yourself to consumerism and you will always find yourself empty at the end of the day. You have not truly died to yourself.

Life is in the Word. We are just soil. Moralism may prepare the soil well but it doesn’t give life. It is the Word that gives life.

Lifegroup cannot convince you how precious Jesus is. We actually cannot offer anything that ultimately makes you love Christ more. It’s remembering what He’s already done for you. It’s you realizing how precious His word and the great lengths you would take to cultivate soil so it can bear fruit in your life!
