Genesis 9:18-11:32

Summary: They refused to obey God’s commandment to be fruitful and inhabit the whole earth, so God cursed them with different languages and scattered them over the earth.
We are seeing a replay of Genesis 1-3. New creation → God makes covenant with man → what happens next?
Mankind wanted to write their own story of glory, hence “making a name for themselves.” Is having a good name or reputation wrong in itself? → God makes some people well-known (Billy Graham). Why is it wrong to “make a name for ourselves”?
Connection to the tree of knowledge of good and evil as opposed to the tree of life. We are usurping God’s role and his divine status — deciding for ourselves what is best, what is good, and who we want to be. It is another grasp for self-autonomy, independence from God.
In this narrative, God reminds us He is God. He is the ultimate storyteller. What genealogies have been provided to us in Genesis already? What has each resulted in?
- Cain → wickedness
- Adam > Seth → Noah’s righteousness
- Noah’s Sons → Tower of Babel wickedness
- Noah > Shem → Abram
Notice a pattern? One line leads to rebellion; the other holds the promise of redemption. As a Bible reader, we’re being invited to expect something from Shem’s line — the seed of the woman who will crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15). The Bible’s narrowing its focus.
Do you know why I began to nerd out about church history? Because I firmly believe all those who are truly saved can trace their spiritual lineage back to Christ. Just like the genealogies we see here. They are not random.
My dad came to Christ because a random Vietnamese war vet shared the gospel with him. That man heard it from someone else… and on and on. There’s a spiritual genealogy — God using imperfect people to pass on perfect news.
And guess what? If you are a born again believer, you’re now part of that line. The Church continues the mission of blessing the nations through Christ.
Why This Matters Today
Genesis 9–11 shows us two possible stories:
- Make a name for yourself — and fall apart.
- Receive your name from God — and become part of His redemptive story.
Sin’s impact is real — disobedience, unbelief, idolatry — but it’s not the end of the story if you repent and have faith in Jesus. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
