Purposes:

  1. To warn them against the heresies concerning the person and nature of Christ
  2. To warn them against ritualism and asceticism
  3. To present Christ as the Head of the Church in His Deity and Humanity
  4. To exhort them to put off the old man and to put on the new man

Messages:

  1. Christ is in all, through all, and above all. He is the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
  2. We are to set our affections on things above and not on things on the earth.

The church in Colossae stirs gratitude and comfort in Paul’s heart as he remembers them in this letter. He encourages them to continue to live a life worthy of the Lord and reminds them of the deity and mystery of Jesus Christ - the reason Paul has suffered so much.
