John 18

v.1

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it.

v.2

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

v.3

So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Why does John mention that Judas needed lanterns and torches but doesn’t say that Jesus and His company needed them? John is winking at us by telling us this. Aha! Scripture is emphasizing that Judas was walking in the darkness. Without Jesus, he had no light. It goes back to what John records in 11:9-10: those who walk at night will stumble because they have no light. Judas’s choice to betray Jesus leads to darkness, even separation from God. The eventual consequences of this darkness are tragic suffering and pain.

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
